Doubling revenue annually since the company’s founding in 2000, rapidly expanding markets for both pet products and organic products account for the company’s growth. Founders Shelley Gunton and Brian Connolly recognized the market potential seven years ago when they started a company in a category that barely existed. Today, although natural and organic pet food accounts for a fraction of the total pet food category, it’s projected to grow twice as fast. Additionally, pet food is coming in as the one of the top growth categories in the organic segment, which as a whole has doubled since 2003.
“Two trends emerged in the past few years: pet owners are taking care of their dogs and cats like children, and these ‘pet parents’ are realizing that organic foods are not just for their human kids anymore,” stated Castor & Pollux Pet Works “Top Dog” Shelley Gunton. “In fact, the pet food recall earlier this year heightened demand for safer products, and consumers looked to organics for peace of mind.”
With the company’s expansion of its Organix certified organic pet food line, Castor & Pollux Pet Works now has the largest line of organic dry food, canned food and treats for dogs and cats on the market. The company’s newest product, the Go Organic Kit, is an all-in-one kit that makes it easy for pet parents to introduce their four-legged “kids” to the benefits of organic food.
The company has aggressively expanded availability over the past nine months in mainstream retailers as well as natural food stores, including Whole Foods and Wild Oats throughout the East Coast.
