5 Holiday Pet Travel Tips

Mon, 11/21/2011 - 15:14

The holiday season is here again – and somehow it seems to sneak up on us faster every year! As we (my husband, myself, and our 3-year old Goldendoodle, Mackay) get ready to travel home to Boise for Thanksgiving, it seems like a fitting time to talk about tips for holiday travel withpets. We make the seven-hour drive from Portland to Boise a few times a year, and are lucky enough to have a dog that doesn’t mind the long ride too much. Here are some great travel tips from tripswithpets.com to ensure that you and your fluffy friend arrive at your holiday destination safe and happy!

·      No heads out the window:  Although many pets find that sticking their head out the window is the bestpart of the road trip, it’s not safe.  Your pet can easily be injured by flying debris.  This should go without saying, but NEVER travel with a pet in the back of a pickup truck. Some states have laws restricting such transport and it is always dangerous.

·      Frequent pit stops:  Always provide frequent bathroom and exercise breaks. Most travel service areas have designated areas for walking your pet. Be sure to stay in this area particularly when you pet needs a potty break…and of course, bring along a bag to pick up after your pet.  When outside your vehicle, make sure that your pet is always on a leash and wearing a collar with a permanent and temporary travel identification tag.

·      Proper hydration:  During your pit stops be sure to provide your pet with some fresh water to wet their whistle.  Occasionally traveling can upset your pet’s stomach. Take along ice cubes, which are easier on your pet than large amounts of water.

·      Watch the food intake:  It is recommended that you keep feeding to a minimum during travel.  Be sure to feed them their regular pet food and resist the temptation to give them some of your fast food burger or fries (that never has a good ending).

·      Don’t leave them alone:  Never leave your pet unattended in a parked vehicle. On warm days, the temperature in your vehicle can rise to 120 degrees in minutes, even with the windows slightly open. In addition, an animal left alone in a vehicle is anopen invitation to pet thieves.

Dog-on-Diet Week 6 Update

Fri, 11/18/2011 - 13:27

Haley

The weather overall has been sunny and dry so it’s better for our hiking, not so muddy. On Monday we did a walk around the neighborhood in the morning and an afternoon hike. Haley was exhausted (see pic), but it was good for us both! Things are going smoothly and Haley lost another pound for a total of 3 pounds! I am glad to see the scale moving in the right direction. We adjusted her food slightly, a little less, and now we can’t wait for more weight to come off. Hats off to all who are working with their pets and their weight loss journey, I know it is not easy for them and it’s definitely not an easy process for us parents either! Keep up the great work!

Bandit

Bandit is just finishing week 6 on his dog on a diet program.  The weight is slow to come off, but he is still holding on at 15 pounds. He actually has a waist now and you can see slimming in his shoulders.  He also has a neck!!!.  His energy level is still up and he can now walk a mile a day without heavily panting. His tummy still looks like it is full of puppies, but no longer drags the ground.  He looks healthier and happier.  His breathing is so much better. It used to be somewhat labored but not anymore.  He is actually starting to play with the toys is his toy box, but if you catch him he will stop because he knows you are watching!!! Maybe this week we can break the 15 pound mark.

Molly

Molly’s weight is holding steady at 16 pounds this week.  She hasn’t lost anything but hasn’t gained anything either.  This 7-year-old lady is acting like a puppy again.  She runs around the house playing with us and wanting to be chased.  She plays with her stuffed toy frog often tossing it up in the air from her mouth, talking to it and chewing on it.  She has so much for energy now.  Here’s a picture of her with her frog inviting you to play tug-of-war with her.

Tator Tot

Yay!!  For the first time in a couple weeks Tator Tot has lost more then 0.1 lbs…he is down 0.2 lbs from 14.8 last week to 14.6 this week.  He has been playing a lot more lately with our other dogs and has found some interest in pulling the stuffing out of toys.  He absolutely loves going for our morning walks…he just follows me around the house until I put his leash on him and he knows it’s time to go!

Duchess

Duchess is down 4 oz this week! Doesn’t seem like much but we think it’s a big deal!  This week has been a bit chilly but dry so we’ve been going for walks more often we have to keep them shorter though. A few weeks ago we mentioned that she’s been playing with toys more, this has continued- we keep cleaning up her toys and she keeps getting them back out! She is also initiated games of chase with her brother Baron more often!

Maize

One of Maizey’s favorite things to do is play hockey in the backyard. It’s great exercise and she loves it. She takes walks when she doesn’t play hockey. After playing she enjoys eating her Organix Dog Food and knows when it’s time to eat. She is doing great and looks forward to meals now more than ever.

Maizey has an autofeeder and last week with the time change she got up to eat breakfast, but no food was there. She looked so sad so I hand fed her and adjusted her autofeeder. Everythings still going great!

Daphnie

Daphnie is doing well this week. She hasn’t lost any weight, but she hasn’t gained any, so that’s good! She does seem a little more perky. She is still getting a 1/3 cup and I’m doing well keeping her away from toddler snacks. Hope all the other dogs are doing well this week!

Emma

This week Emma has not lost any weight nor did she gain any weight…We had a couple of rainy days so we had to play indoors and Emma was not happy about that at all!!  I am just happy she is keeping the weight off! I am very proud of her!!  I get a lot of compliments on how good she is starting to look…These little girls passed by walking home from school and the one girl said to her friend look Emma getting a waist…It made me smile…and Emma got lots of attention from the girls….which made her happy!!  Emma has a lot of energy now more than when she started out….she jumping on everything….couch, chairs, beds..before you had to help her out..but now it not a problem…oh and she getting behind things I now have to block..lol lol. When we go on our walks she waits for me know…the old person..lol lol that what I feel like when she stops and looks at me as if she was saying come on get a move on it….lol lol Well I hope everyone has a great weekend! Don’t forget to check out C & P FB account where you can see video’s of Emma’s walks or her just causing trouble..lol Till next week..Take care

Jules

What a great week for Jules! Sunday I introduced Jules to my friend’s new dog. They liked each other and played in my friend’s back yard, but we thought we would take them to the park (something Jules has not done since she was a puppy). Once at the park, and off the leashes, they were immediately best friends. They ran around, introduced themselves to other beautiful dogs (and people) and swam. Jules has not been swimming in probably 8 years. She was ecstatic! After we let them play for about an hour or more, we decided we would take a walk around the lake. We ended up doing a 4 mile walk after all the play time. She was a little tired at the end, but never once stopped. She was just so happy to be out with other dogs and enjoying the sunshine. Along the way I could tell that Jules was carrying herself so proudly. She kept looking at me with a smile on her face as if to say “look at me mom, I am really doing it!” I have to tell you, in all the years I have had her, I cannot remember ever being more proud of her. She did so great and it was amazing to see. Of course, when we got home she crashed. As I was watching her sleep that night, all I could think about was how much fun she had, and how she must be dreaming of swimming,  playing at the park and walking around the lake. My friend was so happy that her dog Airlie and Jules are now bff’s we have vowed to keep up with taking them out together. I took her Wednesday to get weighed, and after last weeks weight gain, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But she is down 1.4 lbs from last week! Whoo hoo!!! I am so proud of my baby, and even if the weight loss is slow, I am just extremely happy to see and make her so happy. She is my heart and soul and I would do anything to make her smile. I look forward to all the new adventures we will share together, and I look forward to sharing them with you.

Sgt Pepper

Sgt. Pepper is dining on his Castor and Pollux Weight Management Formula al fresco today! Heading out on a new trail with his “sister and “brother” in a bit. It is very chilly, but when it is sunny, Sgt. Pepper likes to stay outside all day. He used to just lay down and bask, but now he enjoys himself playing, and playing, and running, and playing! He has been so happy and energetic since about week 2 of this wonderful program, and has lost 6lbs! He “smiles” all of the time and just seems so content! I can’t believe we are on week 6!

Diablito

Diablito & buddies are waiting for the weather to clear before taking off on our walk. Diablito appears to not have lost any weight since his last trip on the scale; however, his skin and coat look fantastic!

Blitzen

Blitzen got on the couch the other day!! He wasn’t sure what to do once he was up there but it is one more accomplishment since starting the Dog-On-Diet program!!

This is what I’ve been waking up to lately, followed by him jumping up if I make him wait more than 5 minutes before getting up for his walk!!

Rosie

Rosie is tired from her shopping trip and ride in the car. She has lost 4 ozs. so far. Here she is lying on the door mat while I cooked supper. She doesn’t understand the excitement of losing weight!

Tallulah

Tallulah has had a great week too! She loves her Castor and Pollux Weight Management food. She waits at her spot on the rug in the kitchen for her breakfast and gobbles up her kibble. She has more energy and pep in her step. I’m sure she has lost weight. I will take her to the vet either Monday or Tuesday for her weigh in. Have a great weekend all.

Cody

Cody has been stuck on a plateau, no weight loss but he continues to get more and more energy and playfulness coming out every day.

He just had his 5th birthday and he has been having play dates with his friends Max and Riley.  He is ready for turkey day that is coming next week, but knows he doesn’t have a chance getting to do anything more than just smell all that wonderful food.  However, he DOES get to play with family and his favorite person Little AJ!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone, I am thankful for so many blessings that God has given me and Cody choosing me for his forever home is at the top of that list!

Gizmo

Gizmo had a crazy week. He was dog sitting with 6 other dogs. He enjoyed some of the last nice weather before winter. He also has an appointment with a vet dermatologist because he has hives that won’t go away. He also weighs 30lbs now!

Shooter

Hey! What’s Shooter doing?! He’s kicking back after a really long walk! The cold has made his pads a little sore so we put a little ointment on and some socks and he’s good to go! We just got back from our weigh in and slowly but surely the pounds continue to come off! This week Shooter lost 4 ounces he went from 93.6 to 93.2. The changes are still amazing us since he’s been on the Organix Weight Management formula. Between his energy level and his shiny coat we see him improving every day! Happy Thanksgiving to our fellow contestants and oh what a week it will be with all those great Thanksgiving smells cooking! Hang in there everyone we can get through this!

K-9 Blog Stardate November 18, 2011

Amazing news fellow star dieters…Prue is down to 69.1 lbs.   She wanted to celebrate with an ice cream cake but since she has no opposable thumbs….she settles for a Castor & Pollux rawhide braid.

Since the diet began, Prue like most others has experienced an increase in her energy level.  While this is a wonderful thing, I may have to start eating Castor & Pollux food myself because apparently it’s no longer acceptable to sit on the couch and watch tv during leisure time….Now it’s expected to either play with every single toy in the house, take a walk, or basically anything but not pay attention to Prue.

All of the new demands aside, we are very pleased with the effects this diet has had on Prue… and can’t wait to see how much better it’s going to get over the next couple months ….

Josephine

Josephine is heading to the vet today and we’ll see if she’s lost any more weight! She has been doing great. She’s been having lots of fun playing with our newest foster beagle, Dora. Josephine and two of the beagles chase each other around the yard. Jo is super fast so it’s pretty fun to watch and she outmaneuvers them pretty well. I am attaching a picture of Josephine playing with Olie, her big beagle/hound brother.

Is there really a difference between natural and organic pet food? And does it matter?

Wed, 11/16/2011 - 14:15

We have all read, seen, or experienced ourselves that healthy, natural, and organic foods are becoming mainstream in the food world. This category has been exploding for human food, with over 95% of households now buying natural and 68% of households now buying organic (1). In fact, the category (combined) represented nearly $40B in sales in 2010 (2), up from $12B back in 2000.

Natural and organic pet food has experienced even more dramatic growth and now tops $2B in sales in the U.S. alone (3). And over half of pet parents worry if food contains unwanted ingredients (4), which is fuel for even more growth in years ahead.

OK, so natural and organic pet food is growing; meaning a lot of people are buying natural and organic food for their pets. But what constitutes pet food being natural? What is organic pet food? Is there any real difference between the two? And should you care? These are the questions I BEGIN to answer below.

I see several differences in what is “organic” and what is “natural:”

  • Organic is about what happens to the ingredients at origin (farm, field) and natural is about what happens after it leaves its place of origin (less processing). Organic provides quality assurance and peace of mind, since it is clearly defined and via standards and regulations and monitored by accredited 3rd party organizations.
  • And while natural uses generally healthier ingredients and likely has none of the bad things included, there are no standards nor regulations and when you see the word “natural” on food packaging, it can mean any number of things.

Let’s take a deeper look and start with Natural.

Recently, I read a (seemingly serious) article that defined natural brands as “100% natural, using only natural ingredients from natural sources (5).” So, natural is “natural.”  J

AAFCO defines natural  as being “derived solely from plant, animal, mined sources, either in unprocessed state… not containing any additives or processing aids that are chemically synthetic except in amounts as might occur unavoidably … “  Not clear at all.

To me, natural has to do with how the food or ingredient is handled (processed) AFTER it comes in from the field – no artificial flavors, no artificial colors, no artificial sweeteners, no artificial fats or oils, no humectants, free from additives, free from preservatives, and free from growth hormones.

The positive here is that these ingredients and foods don’t have what’s bad, and because of that they have nothing to hide. This is where we get the sense that natural foods are fresh, wholesome, less processed, and in general, better for your pet.

The negative here is that there are few rules or regulations that exist for products using the natural label. So while going natural means pet food and treats have healthier ingredients, no nasty chemicals, no additives, and no preservatives, there are no 3rd parties regulating or monitoring any of this. This is where we get the sense that natural can be as much about marketing hype as any of the good that natural may stand for.

Now let’s look at Organic.

To understand organic and organic pet foods, you should know two key things: (first) that organic refers to a way of growing and processing agricultural foods; organic farmers don’t use toxic pesticides or chemical fertilizers, and organic farmers feed their livestock only organic feed, hay, and pasture, and (second) that organic includes all the positives of natural (no nasty chemicals, additives, preservatives, no artificial flavors, no artificial colors, no artificial sweeteners, no artificial fats or oils) and then some (e.g. no GMOs). And even processing and manufacturing facilities must be USDA certified organic to process and produce organic pet food. And ingredients and products are tested every step of the way.

I think of organic as being “natural plus.” Everything is inspected, tested, and documented by 3rd parties, with your pet’s best interest in mind. So, organic goes beyond natural. Just think – the Organic Center determined that, on average, nutrient levels in organic foods are 25% higher than their conventional (non-organic) equivalents. And a recent study showed that pets eating organic reduce their pesticide intake by as much as 90%!

Back in October, 2002, the U.S. organic standards were instituted by the USDA to make the organic labeling consistent, to clarify different categories of organic foods, and to provide assurance of product integrity. Being certified organic means the product, ingredients, farms, storage facilities, and processing and product plants are all subject to very rigorous requirements of the USDA’s National Organic Program (including initial approval processes, ongoing certifying agencies, regular announced and unannounced 3rd party reviews). This applies to both ingredients and products made/grown in the U.S. and that which is imported from other countries. No marketing hype here. Organic pet food is literally certified to the source, thereby proving real transparency and traceability.

That’s a lot to take in! Do those differences matter to you? Do you prefer to buy organic?

Dog-on-Diet Week 5 Update

Fri, 11/11/2011 - 15:20

Lady

Lady has had such awesome changes in the month she has been on the Organix food! I can’t believe how shiny her coat is! She was already on a specialty food for skin, but her coat actually looks better with the Castor & Pollux diet!! She is running at the dog park and racing Halo to the ball!! We are so impressed with how Lady is doing we have now switched Halo onto the C &P Ultramix formula. They both LOVE their new foods! I add warm water to Lady’s and it makes this type of gravy. She likes it so much that she literally licks the bowl clean! In fact, she has gotten so spoiled she won’t eat it dry anymore!! We didn’t do a weigh in this week, so I don’t know if she has lost any poundage, but part of me swears I’m starting to see some curves on Ms Fatty Cakes!!!

Emma

Emma is doing great on her diet…I measured her on Monday and her Girth was 19 now it is 18…and her neck was 11 inch now it 10 inches….and her weight was 12.8 and now she is 12.3. The weight is coming off!! I am so proud of her.  We go on our walks.. we did 3 1/2 miles on each walk…I am hoping to get to 5 miles a day with her…slowly but surely we are doing it…She started her jumping thing she use to do as a puppy, she jumps up and down like she on a pogo stick when she want to go for her walks or dinner…lol on her two back legs.. Of course she does this when I have no cell phone to catch it…Emma loves to play with her toys now also. She has them from one end of the house to the other. I go around picking them all up and putting them back in her toy box..she drags them back out again..lol lol I tell her she has to learn to put them back when she is done…lol lol  This is the most weight she has lost on any of the other diet foods out there and believe me I have tried them all….Well till next week…I hope all the other pups are doing well!!

Bandit

Bandit has just finished his 5th week of Dog-on-Diet.  Although he still seems to be holding at 15 pounds, his energy level is up.  Wednesday Bandit took a very long walk to his favorite park and found many birds and squirrels.  He ran and ran, he ran so much he hurt his little paw, Today he had no walk, because we wanted him to rest his paw.  I also think that he is a little tired from his big day yesterday.

Jules

Well, I have disappointing news this week. I just got back from weighing Jules and she has gained 1.2 lbs from last week. I haven’t changed anything, but like I had mentioned last week, her energy level has gone back down. I had also mentioned that I rescued a stray kitten that was only 3 weeks old and has taken a lot of my time. I am not sure if it has had some effect on Jules, but it seems as though it may have. I bought a laser pointer to use to try and get her to run around in the house when it’s cold or rainy (because for being a big girl, she is a big baby when it comes to getting wet) and her excitement with it lasted about 10 seconds. She realized my hand was moving and she gave me the look of “do you seriously think I am that stupid that I don’t see you working that thing? Well, I have had enough!” and so that was that. On a good note, my shih tzu and adult cat love it. So money not totally wasted I realize when I take her places such as Petsmart, she is excited and prances around. So I have made a vow to try and get her out and about more. Hopefully that will help dwindle the waistline. I have had people tell me that you can actually see her waistline now, so something has to be working. She does like to work on her tan in hopes she will be able to show off her bikini body soon. Sadly, she is more interested in working on the tan than she is in working on the body. Well, I hope that next week we will have better news to report. I am still very happy with her effort though and thank you for the wonderful food Until next week.

Molly

Molly has mastered a new athletic skill! She can now jump up on the couch! Earlier her legs were too weak to propel her belly off the ground but between losing some weight and all the walks we’ve gone on, she did it! She surprised me by landing on my lap and nearly spilling my coffee! Here’s a picture of her up on the couch. She’s so proud that she has her paw raised in a salute to herself.  Molly is down a full pound this week to 16 pounds!  With a goal weight of 15 pounds, she is getting there!  Way to go, Molly!  Time for another walk?

Maize

Maize is doing great on the Organix Weight Management food. I had to adjust her walking harness because of the weight loss. She is getting about an hour walk a day. She loves walking so this isn’t hard to do. She has gotten used to having some of the food as treats. She is so much fun even though there is less to love.

Haley

Well it’s been a good week for Haley. She has adjusted great to her food, no issues. She seems to be happy and active. The rain and snow in Sedona this week put a damper on our outdoor activities, but we are squeezing in some good hikes before the next storm hits this weekend. We will weigh her again next week and hoping for a loss!!!

Annie

I took Annie to the vet on Saturday and he said that the rash was most likely seasonal allergies. Unfortunately, the medicine he put her on makes her drowsy–not the best side effect for a dog who needs to lose weight. He also mentioned that she has many of the signs of Cushings Syndrome (something I’ve often wondered if she had). All the more reason to help her lose weight! But some good news did come out of this. He weighed Annie Ann and said that she was down to about 18 pounds!

Also, the weather here has not been cooperating. It was really nice this last weekend, but the last few days have been cold and damp. So the pictures are of what Ann has been doing most of the week, chowing down and sleeping. But when she’s sleeping, I have noticed that she looks a little more like a dog and a little less like a pot-bellied pig!

Tator Tot

This has been another great week for Tator Tot. Tator Tot still loves his weight management food, and really enjoys his good buddy rawhide bone.  Last week he was 14.9lbs today he is 14.8lbs.  Not a big change from week to week, but for him to lose weight at all is awesome!  I’m almost at the point where we need to adjust his collar size to the next spot smaller again!  Tator Tot has so much more energy now that he has lost some weight, he’s even running more often on our walks to school and doesn’t seem as tired when we get home as he used to.

Rascal

Rascal is continuing to show an overall improvement. His energy level is through the roof! We find ourselves moving items in the house so that they don’t get knocked over or broken—things that we were never worried about before! (We don’t care, it’s a good trade-off!) No knick-knacks, candleholders, even books are left near the edge of any table, because when this big guy gets to running and cuts a close corner, he takes out whatever is within ‘sweeping distance’ of his tail. He gets so close, it’s like he’s bending himself around corners! It’s hysterical to watch, especially since it’s been so long and he’s so determined to get whatever it is he’s after at the time (usually Lucky).

Our 18-yr. old cat, Tiger doesn’t seem very pleased with Rascal’s new-found energy. Rascal has always been very laid-back and Tiger wasn’t ever intimidated by him, even considering the huge size difference. Well, that’s all changed now. Yesterday I heard all kinds of commotion in the living room, more than the usually ‘Rascal-chase-Lucky, then Lucky-chase-Rascal.’ I go into the room only to find both dogs double-teaming poor Tiger. They had him cornered, and Rascal was very dramatically reacting to every little flinch Tiger would make in his attempts to make a break for it! Tiger had the most pathetic little yowl going, I thought the poor guy was gonna have a heart attack! (Yes, I scooped him up, comforted him, and took him to safety!) He was never really in any danger (at least I don’t think so!)- I seriously doubt if either one of the dogs would even know what to do with him if they ever caught him!

This week’s picture is of the two dogs wrestling. I don’t think the picture does it justice, but it’s fun to actually see in person. They are so goofy sometimes, but smart enough to mainly wrestle ON THE BED! Kinda smart, actually; no one gets hurt, and when Rascal gets over-bearing and crazy, Lucky jumps off the bed and takes a breather. When he’s ready to go another round, he jumps back up, and they’re at it again. Tails are wagging the whole time. No growling or real biting, just horsing around. I’m sure they’re a little stir-crazy since the weather has been making it harder to get out for a nice long walk.

Duchess

We’ve had some wet and cold days and as you can imagine, our long dogs are not fans! Duchess actually loves climbing in snow banks but this cold rainy stuff is no fun! We go out for walks and she looks at me like “Really, mom? Do I have to?” We are working on playing inside to get some extra exercise!

I attached some photos from one of our nighttime walks.

There are also some photos of Duchess and her brother Baron laying in a sun spot- one of their favorite past times!

K-9′s blog stardate November 9, 2011

Despite our less than glorious weigh in revealing a supposed loss of only .8 lbs… Prudence continues on her quest to conquer the line of clothing in the single letter category (L instead of XXL).

Prudence has been exploring other worlds that exist around the block.. Places she could not make it to before for lack of power to her engines…. Prue is excited to conquer other life forms that may exist even further down the solar system but realizes it may take some time.

Congrats to all other K-9 commanders in this contest and their progress …. More blogs and pics to follow.

Shooter

We are very proud of Shooter this week! His weigh in showed a loss of 2 pounds! Yay! We are very happy. His energy level is staying up there as we’ve been trying to increase the distance of his walks. We have some wet weather in the forecast this week, so we will have to do our best to get those walks in! As far as the handouts go I still catch myself wanting to do this but it has gotten easier. The other dogs seem to have improved with their jumping energy and Shooter has too. There are two logs to go over to get to the river and instead of stopping and stepping over them, Shooter now will jump over them! This is great to see! Have a great week everyone!

I am finally able to announce that I have seen that boost of energy in Daphnie. She is still very lazy, but she makes more of an effort to run, especially up the stairs when coming in from going potty. I am still hoping for more, but I am proud of her : ) All the other dogs look great and I am proud of them too!

Sgt. Pepper

Sgt. Pepper started at 88lbs. His ideal weight is 75-80lbs. He ran and played, ran and played…. you get the idea…and is down 5.8 lbs!!! I did not know the little curvy area near the belly and hips is called the “tuck” – well, it is fully visible now and he is in the highest of spirits. His activity level is well above what it was as a 5 month old puppy. I am happy to see the other participants are having similar experiences….particularly with the jumping!! Castor & Pollux, did you slip jumping beans into this Weight Management formula, or what?

Blitzen

Blitzen is still doing great!! This morning after my alarm went off (he knows what it sounds like and what it means btw) I hear a loud tail thumping beside my bed – I turn to the side and he jumps up on my bed! He has rarely jumped, let alone woken up before me in quite some time!! Loving this program, so excited to see everyone seeing some results

Aggression Between Dogs

Mon, 11/07/2011 - 15:15

Aggression between dogs can result in injury to dogs and/or to the people trying to separate them. The behavior can consist of growling, snarling, barking, lunging, snapping and biting. Aggression between unfamiliar dogs can be due to dominance, fear, or protective behavior over territory or owner. There are several reasons why dogs show aggression:

Dominance Motivated Aggressio
n

This aggression can be elicited by dominant gestures or postures from either dog which can include placing the head or feet on the back of the other dog, dominant body postures such as eye contact, and high tail and stiff legged approach. Owners may inadvertently reinforce the behavior by leash tightening and giving vocal cues which signals to their dog that the impending approach is problematic.

Dogs of near equal dominance and those of the same sex are most likely to compete for dominance. Some extremely bold or assertive dogs will fight rather than back down when challenged. Although dominance challenges may be a source of aggression when two dogs are meeting each other for the first time, most dominance hierarchies are established with posturing and no fights. It is likely therefore that fear, territorial behavior and learned components would contribute to an attack. Dominant aggressive dogs may be over-assertive and/or overprotective if the owners do not have good control or have taken a subordinate position in relationship to the dog.

Territorial Aggression Towards Other Dogs

This aggression is primarily exhibited when unfamiliar dogs are on the resident dog’s property, or what the aggressor considers his territory. Some dogs get highly aroused at the sight of other dogs on their territory and may jump fences, or go through windows or doors to get to the intruder.

Fear-Based Aggression Towards Unfamiliar Dogs

This aggression is very common in aggressive encounters with other dogs. The diagnosis is made based on the body postures and reaction of the dog when faced with another dog. The fearful dog will often have the tail tucked, ears back and may lean against the owner or attempt to get behind them. They may be barking at the approaching dog and backing up at the same time. Often the dog avoids eye contact. Owners that try and calm their aggressive dog may serve to reinforce the aggression, while those that try and punish the dog will only serve to heighten the dog’s fear and anxiety in relationship to the stimulus. Good control can help to calm the dog, while owners who have their dogs restrained on a leash (especially with a choke or pinch collar) and have poor control often have highly defensive dogs. Dogs that are restrained on a leash or tied up are more likely to display aggression when frightened, because they cannot escape.

Learned Threats or Aggression

Should threats or aggression result in the retreat (or removal by the owner) of the other dog, the behavior has been successful. If the owner tries to calm the aggressive dog or distract it with food treats, this may only serve to reward the aggressive behavior. One of the most common mistakes is to punish the dog that is aggressive toward other dogs. This usually serves to heighten the dog’s arousal, and teaches the dog that the stimulus (other dog) is indeed associated with unpleasant consequences. Many owners, in an attempt to gain more control, then increase the level or type of punishment (e.g. prong collars) which further heighten the dog’s fear and in some cases may lead to retaliation and defensive aggression toward the owners.

Prevention

Prevention starts with puppy training and socialization. Early and frequent association with other dogs will enable your pet to learn proper interactions and reactions to other dogs. This can be very helpful in prevention of aggression to other dogs.

You must also have good control of your dog who should reliably respond to commands to ‘sit’, ‘stay’ and ‘quiet’. If necessary, the dog may need a head halter to give you additional control.

How to Deal with an Already-Aggressive Dog

First and foremost, you must have complete control over your pet. This not only serves to calm the dog and reduce its anxiety, but also allows you to successfully deal with each encounter with other dogs. Leashes are essential and the use of head collars and/or muzzles are strongly recommended for dogs that will be in situations with multiple dogs.

Begin by establishing reliable responses to basic obedience commands. If the dog cannot be taught to ‘sit’, ‘stay’, ‘come’ and ‘heel’, in the absence of potential problems, then there is no chance that the dog will respond obediently in problematic situations. Reward selection can be critical in these cases, since the dog needs to be taught that obedient behavior in the presence of the stimulus (other dog) can earn the dog-favored rewards. The goal is that the dog learns to associate the approach of other dogs with rewards.

Long-term treatment consists of desensitization (gradual exposure) and counter-conditioning the dog so that the approach of the other dogs leads to a positive emotional response. In training terms the dog must be taught to display an appropriate, acceptable response when other dogs approach (e.g. ‘sit’, ‘watch’, ‘relax’) which can be reinforced (differential reinforcement or response substitution). This must be done slowly, beginning with situations where the dog can be successfully controlled and rewarded and very slowly progressing to more difficult encounters and environments.

Lastly, for fear-aggressive dogs in particular, anti-anxiety drugs may help to calm the dog enough so that the retraining session is successful. For situations where the problem has become highly conditioned and intense, antidepressants may be useful for regaining control. In most cases however, the best calming influence is a head halter, good owner control and some strong rewards.

Dog-on-Diet Week 4 Update

Fri, 11/04/2011 - 15:17

Molly

Molly and I have been walking longer and longer each day.  She is up to about an hour’s walk most days now and she has lost a half pound this week!  She is down to 17 pounds even with a goal of 15 pounds.  She has much more stamina and is so much more playful than she has been with the reduction in weight.  She might not be in runway shape yet but here is a picture of her modeling the latest in fall foul weather gear.

Tator Tot

Tator Tot is still doing pretty good on his diet.  Last week he was 15lbs, today he is at 14.9lbs.  Slowly but surely he is loosing some weight.  We had a cold front at the end of the week, but that doesn’t stop Tator Tot from wanting to go for his walks with us to school every morning.

Haley

Well, we were on vacation all last week but the dogs were well taken care of. Haley stuck to her diet food and was on limited treats while we were away. She didn’t get out to exercise like usual, but we were at the vet yesterday to get weighed and she didn’t gain any weight. She is still at a 2 pound weight loss, but a 2 pound loss is better than gaining. We will get back on the exercise regimen and get her weight rechecked in a couple of weeks. I think it’s best not to keep weighing her too much because if she doesn’t lose any weight, it’s very easy to get discouraged and fall back into the same old patterns that got us here in the first place. To all of the dogs and their parents, keep up the good work!!!

Emma

This week Emma got to play in the snow…well eat it…she loves to eat snow. Emma weighed the same this week and we are happy about that. She didn’t gain!! On Halloween night we handed out candy and Emma received some extra attention, she was in heaven!!  I notice that Emma is out-walking me now…she stops to let me catch up to her. She loves her walks and loves to chase anything that moves….squirrels, ducks, birds and rabbits. We do 2 to 3 miles every day and when we come home she loves to crawl up in her bed and rests…I am so glad we are having beautiful weather this week. So we will be out more than in this week!! Till next week…Have a great weekend!!<3

Duchess

Duchess’s weight loss has kind of stalled out, she can’t seem to get below 16 lbs. We are going to try to step up her exercise and activity level but these cold rainy days make it hard. :/ She’s had a good week and is most definitely more active. My husband and I didn’t realize how sedentary the dogs had gotten. They are only 3 years old and still have a lot of puppy in them but they were sleeping  A LOT! Now they are playing more often and we are seeing their old puppy energy back and it’s really exciting and refreshing! Duchess has never been much of a toy dog but we are finding her in the toy box more and more! I took some video of her playing with her favorite toy and I’m going to try to post it on Facebook!

Jules

Well we have had an interesting week. We found a 3 week old stray kitten at work last week and so I took it home to foster it back to health. I think it has had some effect on Jules. I think she misses me when I am spending time in the other room with the kitten and she seems a little more down and less energetic this week. I just got back from weighing her and she is down .2 lbs to 82.4 lbs. Not as much of a loss as hoped, but to be honest I will take anything right now as long as she is on the right track to health and happiness. She has probably just hit her “biggest loser week 2 plateau”. It happens to the best of them on that show and I know she will continue to do a great job getting healthy. She still seems to love her food and she tells me every day (ok, not really. I am not Dr. Doolittle) that she is so happy she was chosen for this program. So, from Jules and I, we thank you and can’t wait to update you next week

Gizmo

Gizmo discovered that he loves rolling in broken coffee beans this week. He also got a new house mate which he is sort of okay with. And we had the scare of possible fleas this week. :S

Annie

She has lost another whole pound this week and I’m finally starting to see a waist on her–something I haven’t seen, well, ever. She did get in a little trouble this week when I caught her taking treats right out of Maddie’s mouth! Even after I caught her at it once, she turned around and did it again so she had to have a time out outside while Maddie ate her food (which Annie will eat in addition to her own if no one is watching).

Josephine

I feel I need to give a little background on Josephine because we don’t have a lot of exciting outside activities to share. When we rescued Josephine we were told there was a little dog hiding in the woods near our house. We spent almost a week trying to catch the elusive and very frightened little dog. She ran from us until one day after we had basically given up hope that we would catch her because we had not seen her for a couple days…then we spotted her in a neighbor’s yard. We had her cornered in their fence but, she still kept running from us. Finally my husband sat down and she came to him and rolled over on her back! We scooped her up and took her home. She was VERY thin weighing only 6.5 pounds. Since that time she has been spayed, etc and she of course LOVES to eat so, we have possibly spoiled her a bit since she has more than doubled her weight! It has been just over a year and half since Josephine came to us. She is still very timid and runs from strangers. She does not like strange places or strange people so she rarely leaves our home unless it is to go to the vet. Her activities are restricted to playing with our other dogs. We do rescue so the numbers vary but, currently there are nine total. For this reason the diet and weight management in terms of food is especially important.

With that said Josephine is doing great and we are very pleased with the results so far and this opportunity from Castor and Pollux! I’m attaching a picture of Josephine when she was just a little Pumpkin!

Lady

I can’t believe it!! Lady is running now!!! I haven’t seen Fatty Cakes run in years!!! It happened on Thursday, 10-28.  We were at the dog park. She was racing little sister Halo to the ball and actually got to it first, twice!!! Daddy and I were so happy we stayed almost 2 hours at the dog park that day because we couldn’t bear to have that moment end!!! We sadly report that she has gone from 84.8 last week to 86.5 today. I know that turkey and cheese sandwich she stole off the counter and me spilling 5 lbs of Halos non diet food, which Lady happily “helped” me clean up, were probably the causes. I pledge to guard my lunches better and to quit throwing dog food all over the house

Cody

Cody is doing really well on this food, not only does he love it, but he really has improved even more this week with his energy level and he seems to be sleeping more sound!

He’s been running with his neighborhood buddies and his best friend Max came over last Saturday night.  Some of Cody’s food for dinner was still in the bowl and we realized that Max loves it too! ha ha ha

We haven’t seen any weight change, but will keep up, diets suck, I know THAT for a fact, but at least Cody isn’t suffering the way we humans do!

Bandit

Bandit continues to do well on his Dog-on-Diet program.  He can run further and faster.  Jump higher and keep up with the squirrels as they tease him from the tree tops.  We took him to the vet’s office to use their scales.  He weighed in at 15.02 pounds.  He started at 17 pounds in June, but since October he has lost just about one pound.  He seems to be holding there but it is still early in the race.  We would like to see him get to 11 pounds.  His brother Rusty went with us to the vet, his brother has lost 3 pounds since December.  We feed Rusty the same food as Bandit in the same amount,  Rusty has always been much more active than Bandit, but Bandit is starting to be more playful. Both of our boys get Castor & Pollux ORGANIX Weight Management food, and only Castor & Pollux ORGANIX cookies.  They both have much more shiny and soft coats.  Can’t wait to see what the next few weeks bring.!!!

Sgt. Pepper

We have been slammed by the big snowstorm and it has not been safe to venture out with the dogs due to so many downed trees and live wires. Pepper continues to thrive, and still has this wonderful perkiness about him – just not sure how much exercise, other than playing with the other dogs inside and in back yard, he’ll be getting this week.

Tallulah

Tallulah is still at 37 pounds. I took her to the vet yesterday for her bi-weekly weigh in and was surprised that she had not lost any weight. Having said that she was also at a new boarding facility for a few days where the dogs are not kenneled and I’m sure her main mission was to find food. Her main goal in life! She also came home with a wicked upset stomach. A few days with added rice and she’s back to normal. Even though there has been no loss I do see changes in her. She is not panting as much while walking and she has been able to get up stairs easily like to my bedroom in the evening. And really who could say no to that face! So guess who is sleeping in bed with me!? The picture I’m posting is her hiding under the shrubs and behind the grill because she saw me coming at her with her ladybug Halloween costume. So needless to say…there are none.

Prudence

Prudence is down .8 lbs… Lol. I really thought it would be more… Her energy level is up like crazy and she wants to play all the time… More pics soon… She is going to “luxury boarding” for the first time ever o. Sunday and will have lots of play time with other doggies… I’m hoping she drops some lbs while she’s there… Either that or she will sabotage the diet somehow because she’s mad at me for going on a work trip… We shall see …

Shooter

Good news for Shooter at our weekly weigh in at Felton Veterinary! He lost a pound this week. He went from 96.2 to 95.2 this past week. We realize now this is a slow process, so we are grateful for that lb. that was lost! One thing we will start this week, that we have not done, is take some measurements. I’ve noticed that some of the other dogs are doing this. We have had several comments about Shooter that he is looking slimmer. I would imagine even though the pounds are slow coming off he probably is losing some inches! Shooter has a ways to go, really he should be weighing in about 70 to 75 pounds. So! Onward we go this week and to all our fellow dog-on-diet friends have a great week and keep on walking!

Dog-on-Diet Week 3 Update

Fri, 10/28/2011 - 14:41

Gizmo

Gizmo loves going to the park and chasing squirrels.

Sgt. Pepper

Hi there. Just wanted you to see (pic attached) how energetic Sgt. Pepper felt this weekend after nearly a week of 100% Organix Weight Mgmt.! He raced his 1yr old “sister” and 9 month old “brother”. He has never been one to run at full speed, especially for a sustained amount of time. This made me so happy! He seems so happy too! YAY! He has always been a very mellow, low-energy dude, literally stopping to smell the roses on walks. This change is amazing! Usually, when he does full-on run, it is just for maybe 20 seconds or so and then lays in a mud puddle or in the grass, but he is running around with all of the other dogs for several minutes. This photo is of Sgt. Pepper and a foster sibling. Enjoying the wonderful weather….before our first snowfall?!?!? Sgt. Pepper has reached the 2 lb mark! Yahoo.

Shooter

Ah, Shooter has on his sad face. It’s week number three of the dog-on diet program and he has only lost one pound. The good news is he hasn’t gained any! He loves his Organix Weight Management formula and he loves the fact that he does feel better! Even though he has not had much weight loss, Shooter’s energy level has seemed to improve. His coat also has a healthy glow to it that it didn’t before! So we will continue on this week, maybe make those walks a little longer. I will continue to resist the temptation to give into those big (looks like he’s starving!) eyes, and think about how healthy he is getting! Here’s to a great week!

Prue

K-9′s blog, stardate October 18th, 2011

After weeks of searching for her waistline, Prudence finally sees the benefits of not eating her way through each day.  While other galaxies are feeding their furbabies unhealthy fat filled products made in mysterious third world solar systems, Prudence finds that the all-natural Castor & Pollux is the only sustenance for her delicate figure.  Thanks to the Dog-on-Diet program and the love of her Mommy Dixie, Prudence plans to forge on with the slimming down process in hopes of regaining her ability to squeeze through the doggie door.  Nightly walks around the block (prior to 3 weeks ago it was unheard of to make it down the sidewalk and back) and extra playtime with Mom make for a successful combination.  Recruitment also continues at the local Pet Supply stores for more fans to follow Prue’s journey.  Mom has had 3 offers this week alone for furbaby-sitting services.  While we appreciate the offers, there are strict screening, background, and pawprinting procedures that most are unwilling to submit to… So until next week…

K-9 Blog out.

Molly

Molly is re-gaining so much energy.  She saw a little brown bunny in our yard when we were walking and she took off after it like a shot!  I didn’t know she had that kind of stamina in her.  I think she enjoyed chasing the rabbit but didn’t actually want to catch it because she pulled up short just as she was about to overtake the rabbit.  She sat back on her haunches and watched it escape and then returned to me very pleased with herself.  In these pictures, Molly is keeping tabs on the yard on the lookout for more rabbits.

Blitzen

Blitzen is still doing great – hasn’t been eating his food as quickly as usual so I reduced the amount of food and have been mixing in some Ultramix wet food to get his appetite back on track. He loves it and has been eating great! Still going strong on 2-3 walks a day. He wakes me up at the sound of my alarm to go walk Will weigh him within the week. It’s OSU’s homecoming this weekend – busy time!! Go Pokes!! Down 3 lbs! About 8 more to go until he is at his ideal weight – let’s get it going Blitz!!

Daphnie

Week 3 has been a little tough for Daphnie. She has gained all her weight back and is still preferring to sleep. They only time she perks up is to go for a car ride, potty, and food. My dog is food obsessed. To give you an idea on how obsessed, here are some examples of what she has eaten. She has eaten half of a XXX (which is a bun with 4 patties on it), 1/4 of a family lasagna (getting into the garbage), and last Halloween she got into the garbage again and ate diapers, leftovers, ect. She was rushed to the emergency vet and almost died. She was diagnosed with HGE and recovered after 2-3 weeks of preparing her bland food. She never liked toys….never. She always preferred rawhides. She always goes with us on family outings, but once she gets tired, I carry her. I have reduced her food to compensate for my little one sneaking food to her. I’m a little discouraged, with how she is acting with walks, but I won’t give up. I did get both Daphnie and my daughter to chase me around the house today…that’s progress for Daphnie ; )

Lady

Week 3 and everything is falling into place. The feeding and walking schedule are becoming routine, Lady’s week goes like this… Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings, the dog park followed by a 1 mile walk, Wednesday afternoon we walk to the vet for our weigh in, Friday and Saturday we go to the dog park, but leave the 1 mile walks for the weekdays and Sunday we just chill. I just hope I can maintain our schedule once the cold gets here!! Lady’s starting weight was 87.2 lbs, her weight this week was 84.8lbs for a total loss of 2.4!!!

Cody

Here’s Cody getting ready for Halloween! His new pumpkin toy! Unfortunately, he didn’t lose a pound this week, but I have to tell you, his energy level and his playfulness just keeps improving and getting stronger! He’s much more attentive, chasing his buddies in the neighborhood and following me around in the yard.  He’s sleeping through the night and his appetite is HUGE! He LOVES this food. Everything just seems to be getting better.  I will say though, I KNOW he is hoping I don’t get out last year’s spiderman costume for him, LOL

Annie

This week, Annie, Maddie and I went for a walk in a park in a nearby town. The park has excellent walking paths and it was such a nice day that we ended up walking almost 2 miles! Annie was so tired that she fell asleep in the car on the way home. Unfortunately, when I got to the park I realized that I had forgotten to change the batteries in my camera so I have no pictures from the park. Yesterday the weather got really cold so she has to wear a sweater since she just got a haircut. I weighed her yesterday and she’s lost a pound! So now she’s on her way to looking slim and stylish in her new sweater.

Jules

Well Jules is doing great with the ORGANIX. She really loves it! I notice that she takes time to savor her food now instead of just gulping it down. Which I am hoping will help with the weight loss as well. She seems to actually get satisfied by her food now. Last week I told you that she use to try to always eat her sister Liberty’s food. Well now the tables have turned. I have caught Liberty (a 10 lb Shih Tzu) eating Jules’ food at least twice in the last week. Liberty now waits for Jules to step away for even a second to run over and snag a few bites. Jules is still more active than before and she seems so happy. I need to get her out of the house and on more walks, but have been sick this past week and haven’t been able to do so. I did take her to get weighed and she lost .8 lb. She weighed 83.4 last time and this time she is down to 82.6 lbs. I am really happy with the progress. I am so proud of her and can’t wait to keep seeing the changes in her.

Emma

I am happy to report that Emma has weighed in now at 12.8 lbs. We started at 13.8 so we have loss a whole pound. She also fitted into an outfit (a snuggie) I bought for her last year and it didn’t fit her….so I put it away in hopes that someday she would get into it…I also notice that her harness is moving around her waist when I am walking her. The clasp should be on the side of her and now it is in the middle of her back because it moves. You can see it in the video that I will post on C&P Facebook account. I also notice that she has no trouble now jumping up and down on my couch to sit in her window seat. I used to  have to help a little bit to get her in the window. Her coat is so shiny also…someone told me at Petco her coat looks like velvet, and I said Thank you!!  We will continue our walks. It is supposed to snow on Saturday…We look forward to playing in it!! Till next week…Wish all other pups good luck! <3

Josephine

Cue the Rocky theme song…Josephine is ready to hit the gym! She has lost 1.5 lbs!!! We couldn’t be happier to see our little butterball trimming down and being happy while she’s doing it!!! She just loves her food and we have been much, much better about not giving her treats the same size the big dogs get!! She eats her kibble as treats and gets just as excited as if she were getting a big ole biscuit!!

Tator Tot

This past week Tator Tot finally hit his 1lb weight loss mark!  I think I was more excited than he was though. Last week he was 15.2 lbs and today he is at 15lbs.  We have started to walk more…up to 2 miles every morning.  I have noticed that Tator Tot seems to enjoy the walks a lot more now that he has lost some weight and we are finally getting some cooler weather down here.

Bandit

Bandit continues to do well on his dog-on-diet program.  He has lost a total of one pound. That is quite a bit for such a small dog.  His ideal weight should be 10 to 11 pounds, so he has a ways to go.  He is determined!!! He dreams about being named the winner.  Every day he walks further and further and has more energy. He is always asking if he has won yet and is waiting to collect his prize.

Diablito

Well, the weigh in was this morning and Diablito is down 1 pd! It’s a slow start but still a start. He’s been stubborn this week and not eating much of his kibble and am thinking he may need more strenuous walks to work up an appetite! Good luck to everyone on our next week of dieting!

Tallulah

A very tired Tallulah! We were out today for two long walks. Yesterday was her birthday and I forgot! She is now 3 year’s old. For her birthday treat she got three craisins.

Rosie

Rosie is tuckered out and finally went to sleep after a hard day of shopping at PetSmart for Castor & Pollux products!

Duchess

Duchess spent this week in Chicago with mom visiting her grandparents.

She had a week of extra scratches and kisses. She particularly enjoyed her morning walks with grandpa and playing with their dog Bandit (and Bandits toys!).

4 Tips for Using Natural Light to Photograph Your Pets

Mon, 10/24/2011 - 15:06

You know it when you see it — the golden hour. It’s that hour just after the sun rises (and just before it sets again) when the light is soft and thought by many photographers to be perfect for portrait photography. This light is ideal for photographing people — fewer shadows, no harsh light, a warm glow — and it’s also very flattering to pets, too. If you want to make the best of this natural light to photograph your four-legged friends, here are four things to keep in mind:

  1. Watch for shadows. Since the light is softer during the golden hour and not as harsh as it will be at high noon, the shadows will be softer, too. Pay attention to any shadows that are falling across Fido’s face in an unflattering way. Moving him just a little should help correct the problem.
  2. Put yourself between the sun and your pet. Not only will having the sun on your back feel good on a beautiful autumn evening, it will also be at the best location for lighting your pet’s face. Just be sure to watch that your own shadow isn’t in the way.
  3. Get down on your pet’s level. Shooting down on your pet isn’t the best angle (unless he happens to be looking up at you with those hard-to-resist puppy-dog eyes), so get down on his level, nose to nose. This angle will help you capture all the cute details straight on, from his wet nose to his floppy ears.
  4. Keep the best, delete the rest. Your furry friend may not be willing to sit still for very long, so be sure that you take several pictures before giving up. You may get lucky and snap the perfect picture on your first try, but the more pictures you take, the more likely you are to get “the one” you’re after.

Dog-on-Diet Week 2 Update

Fri, 10/21/2011 - 15:27

Jules

First let me say that Jules LOVES her food! We received the package on October 4th, and I took about 8 days blending it in until it was completely ORGANIX. Right away I have noticed changes in her. She used to always try to find her sister’s food and eat it after she was finished with hers. Her sister is a 10 lb Shih Tzu and so in order to keep Jules from Liberty’s food, I feed Liberty under the bed. Sounds sad, but Liberty loves it. Anyway, Jules used to do anything she could to get to Liberty’s food, but as of late, she has not been even looking for it. After she eats, she seems to be content. Finally! Also, when she was young, whenever I would come home she would be so excited. She would jump and run and jump some more to show me just how excited she was. She has not done that in years, until now. Every day she is so much more energetic than the day before. Even my mom noticed it when she came over one day. She hasn’t played with toys in years, but she is starting to again. She runs more and my mom said “She just seems happy.” Which of course makes me really happy. We took her to get weighed today, and through all the squirming and moving around we determined that she is down a pound! Yay!!! So she started at 84.4 and is now 83.4. I have cut out all treats, but I know I need to up the walking and play time. I just can’t get over the change in her already. I cannot wait to see how much happier she gets. Thank you so much, and I will keep on keeping you posted

Tallulah

Tallulah is great. I’ve noticed a little more pep in her step, and she has been climbing stairs a little better. She normally sits and cries for one of us to go down and carry her up the stairs! Took her to the vet for a weigh in…..drum roll please…. Two paws up ! ! Down one pound ! !

Blitzen

Since starting the Dog-On-Diet program, Blitzen has shown much more interest in daily activities, where before he would sleep about 90% of the day, now he will follow me around and interact with my roommate’s dog much more. He loves the rawhides and though he never got table scraps or treats before, the rawhides are a good way to keep him entertained for a few hours!

Before the program, I was walking him once every night for about 15-20 minutes, now I am able to walk him twice a day for about 30-45 minutes each time. The most miraculous thing of all; he runs now!!!! I haven’t seen him run with confidence in over two years and it’s such a joy to finally see him getting back to the spunky boy he was before the weight gain. So excited to continue to see results.

Bandit

Bandit is doing well on the dog on a diet program. Although he still likes to sit on the couch with his papa and watch tv as much as he can, he is walking further and further every day. He has his favorite houses where he knows the squirrels live. He will run from one house to the other stand at the bottom of the tree and bark….he does not know that this makes them hide!!! He has also lost a whole pound! Bandit loves to go to Apple Hill. There are many people to bark and growl at. Every one either thinks he is cute, too fat, or going to have puppies. The children really like him, but he does not like them. But we went there for him to pick out some pumpkins!!! Here are his pumpkins, and his reaction to them……

Haley

I took Haley in to get weighed on Monday and she is the same. We had a couple of hikes, not as long as last week. It was a little more difficult this week regarding treats. She is trying to figure out why the other dogs are getting different things than she gets, but she’s ok. It’s probably harder for me!

Sgt. Pepper

He seems to be really coming around to the Weight Management Organix, and seems to have more energy. He is nearly transitioned to consuming 100% Organix Weight Management, as opposed to Ultramix and regular Organix. He seems to be really reacting positively to its benefits and has more energy – maybe he is already feeling a little lighter! Thanks so much Castor & Pollux for making such wonderful, quality food to provide to my dogs, and for including us in your Dog-on-a-Diet contest! We appreciate all of the goodies and food you have sent to help us get our buddy back in shape!

Josephine

Josephine is doing great!!! I swear she has a little waistline! She doesn’t look so much like a bowling pin like he Daddy was calling her

Emma

This week Emma took a ride to Petco where we made new friends and got ORGANIX Weight Management food, she was very happy!!! She also had her nails trimmed and wasn’t too happy about that…. Emma loves veggies and fruits and has adjusted to not getting as much as she used to. We go on our walks and we even made it to 3 miles for the first time ever this week!!  We really love being outdoors and we love our walks…On the days we can’t go out because of the rain we play indoors now. She never wanted to play indoors but lately she does and it is funny to watch her run all over the house carrying a toy…she is such a character. She really keeps me smiling!  It’s fun to see all of the other pups do well and we wish them all good luck!!  Everyone keep up the good work!! I’ll keep everyone posted…….and check out C&P Facebook…till next week.

Molly

Molly’s original owner no longer could keep her as she (the owner) moved to assisted living.  Molly lived at a foster home for a few months and we were lucky enough that she was available to us.  We’ve had her just over a week now.  We weighed her at 17.5 pounds last Saturday but the vet wants her to weigh 15.  She was reportedly even heavier in the past and her back legs are pretty thin, not the well-exercised legs one would expect in an animal.  We are walking her longer and longer everyday trying to build muscle and stamina.

Daphnie

Well Daphnie is still loving the food, but has gotten a little itchy. She is having a hard time finishing her walks, which are short. I think it’s due to the weather change making her leg ache a little. We live in Yakima, so it’s still not too cold, but it will be soon. I have noticed her run up the stairs a little better after going potty! We still have to lift her up on the couch when she wants up. That’s her being pampered. Everyone calls her the queen ; ) We have made a few trips to Petco and PetSmart to just walk around. This pic was today at PetSmart, which I shouldn’t be in since I work at Petco…hehe.

Tator Tot

This week Tator Tot has not had any weight change.  He was 15.2 last week and weights 15.2 again this week.  Tator Tot has become very quick at getting dropped food off the floor from my 2 year old before I or even my other dogs can get it.  We continue to take Tator Tot for walks with us to school every day, so hopefully next week we will see a change.

Cody

Cody lost 1 lb. this week. We’ve cut back and eliminated his treats, which he is NOT happy about. BUT, he loves going for the extra walks with AJ, and being able to enjoy the cooler weather makes it even MORE perfect! He loves this food, that’s just a bonus! He seems more energetic, more spunky and playful. I can’t wait to see what is different next week!

Diablito

Diablito and his brother are doing good on their diet, his weigh in is today! Here he is after a long hike in the Bisti Wilderness area.

Rascal

Rascal has so much more energy since starting on Organix! He has been getting a good workout most days. Here he’s taking a nap on top of his toys after a long walk!

Prudence

It took us a while to get out of the store today….we were recruiting new friends to follow us on the Castor & Pollux Pet Facebook page…hopefully people keep their promises because we didn’t exchange numbers. Is it me or am I actually seeing a waistline on Miss Prue in this picture??? Maybe???

Duchess

Duchess sitting pretty! She is doing great on her diet! She is playing with her brother more and her coat already seems shinier and softer!

Shooter

Hi to all our fellow friends on “the dog-on- diet” program. I just wanted to hi and see how everyone was doing! I am Shooter’s mom and I don’t know about all of you, but it was hard to make some adjustments! I can’t believe how many times I had to catch myself giving Shooter a hand out or sharing a bite of this or that with him! I never realized how much extra I was feeding him until now. Thank goodness this program came along to make me wake up and see what I was doing! So just wanted to give everyone encouragement to stick with this. Think about the time that will be added to their life! Good luck everyone and hang in there!!!

Excessive Norturnal Activity in Cats

Mon, 10/17/2011 - 15:12

Why does my cat seem to be most active at nights?

Some cats are active at night or awake and “raring to go” very early in the morning. Since many cat parents are out at work or school during the day, the cat may spend the daytime hours in rest and relaxation, especially if it is the only pet in the household. The cat’s day then begins when the owner arrives home to provide the cat with feeding, play and social interaction. This is also the most natural time for cats to be active since they are most active in hunting and exploration at dusk and dawn (this is known as crepuscular). Typical complaints from cat owners include cats that nibble on or attack the owner’s ears or toes in bed, walking across the sleeping owners, nighttime vocalization, or explosive, uncontrollable play sessions across the furniture and/or owners during the night or early morning. Some owners inadvertently reward the behavior by giving the cat a little food, affection, or attention to try and calm the cat.

How can I stop my cat from keeping me up at night?

You must learn to schedule and encourage play and feeding during the daytime and evening hours, so that the cat’s schedule more closely matches yours. Adjusting the timing of feeding or the type of food may help to alter the cat’s sleep schedule. For example, eating a few hours earlier or later, or increasing the evening meal to one that is higher in carbohydrates, may help to alter the cat’s schedule just enough that it sleeps through the night.

Some cats can be retrained by keeping the cat awake and active by playing, feeding and interacting with the cat throughout the afternoon and evening. Catnaps in the evening should be discouraged.

If the cat continues to disturb you during the night, confining your cat out of the bedroom, and providing it with a comfortable sleeping area with a litter box may do the trick. Do not provide food through the night as this encourages the cat to stay awake. On the other hand, if the cat remains active, providing the cat with ample opportunity for scratching, climbing and play in a confined area may occupy the cat until it becomes tired.

Cats that are vocal when locked out of the bedroom must be ignored. Going to the cat or giving attention in any way will only serve to reward the demanding behavior. Cats that scratch or bat at the bedroom door can be kept away by the use of an upside down carpet runner, electronic pet mat or perhaps a motion detector (although it might disturb the owner). Citronella spray avoidance units are also available. If the cat is overly vocal, lock it away in as sound proof an area as possible such as a washroom. Of course, make sure that it has everything it needs in the room if you choose this option.

Is there medication that might help?

If all else fails and the cat does not sleep through the night with behavioral techniques alone, your veterinarian may be able to provide some medication to help your cat fall asleep for the first few nights.

Dog-on-Diet Week 1 Update

Fri, 10/14/2011 - 13:54

Well our Dog-on-Diet participants have received their starter kits and have begun their journey to a healthy weight! Here’s a week 1 recap from our pet parents:

Josephine

Josephine is doing great with her new food. She loves it…not surprised since she loves FOOD but, it helps that she enjoys it and it’s good for her! She has been getting pieces of kibble when the bigger dogs get treats and she is just fine with that. Jo has recently started playing/wresting with her furbrother Olie which is pretty funny since he’s a 40 lb hound mix!

Haley

On Monday, it was Haley’s first official day on the new food. I took her to the vet for a “starting” weight and she weighs 69 pounds. She is down 2 pounds from when I last took her to the vet a few weeks ago. She is adjusting to not getting treats like she used to. She loves her chew stick and we are using part of her daily food allowance as her “treat” in the evening when the other dogs get their treats. We took 2 hikes so far this week, between 2 and 3 miles each and have another planned for Friday. So far, so good!

Emma

Hello Everyone, I am very excite to report that Emma weigh in at 13.8 lbs(10/7) and today she is 12.10 lbs.!! Yahoooooo!!!! We been walking a lot lately and we started out very slow, we would walk .07 mile to start with now we are at 2.5 miles a day!! She loves it and so do I!! She also played for the first time in a while and we had a ball on the deck tossing the disk around. I notice she has more energy also which is a good thing. I hope you enjoy this as much as we are!! You can see more of Emma on C&P Fb page.

Tator Tot

Tator Tot is doing really well on the diet.  His starting weight was 16 pounds, and today he is 15.2 lbs.  I walk my son to school every day, so Tator Tot has started walking with us.  My son really loves to walk one of his dogs to school.  Tator Tot LOVES the food, and I think adding the water to it has made him feel fuller.

Bandit

Bandit has just finished his first 10 days on the dog on a diet program.  So far he has lost just about half a pound.  He started out at 16 pounds he now weighs 15.4 pounds.  I checked with his vet and they would like to see him between 10 and 11 pounds.  So he still has a ways to go.   Bandit has actually been eating Natural Ultramix Weight Management since June, and when he started with that he as at 17 pounds.  Yes he is a real fatty.  The one thing I noticed with him is that his coat is so much softer.

Diablito

We’ve started the program and are having so much fun.  I’m excited to say I’ve overheard my Sister tell Diablito and his brother she can no longer give them bites of what she is eating!   We are getting them out for more walks and she especially looks forward to posting pictures of him on FB.

Duchess

Duchess had a very busy week! She is now officially switched over to eating only Castor and Pollux food. She seems to really like it, at the end of the week she was eating it first and leaving her old kibble behind in her bowl! Duchess had a very eventful week, we brought our new baby home from the hospital and Duchess has had to adjust to all the new noises and smells as well as all the company coming over to visit. She has handled it like a pro! She is very loving and sweet around the baby and wants to be close to him and help Mom and Dad out. We are very proud of her! Here’s a picture of Duchess and Baron looking at their newest family member!

Daphnie

Hi, my name is Daphnie and I am so excited to lose some weight….well my mommy is excited for me : ) I will be 10 years old November 21st and I currently weight 9.2 lbs. I have already lost 1 lb since I started eating this yummy food. I don’t really like to do much, because when I was a puppy I broke my leg and it never healed right…even after two surgeries. My leg is now partially rotated, but I have learned to live with it. My mom has always treated me like a queen, so I don’t hurt my leg, but that has caused some weight gain over the years. I also have a 15 month old human sister that likes to feed me, so I had gained pound since she started eating solids. Well…that is a little about myself. I wish all the other dogs the best of luck : )

The Cure for the “Empty Nester”

Fri, 09/30/2011 - 14:54

Despite some bizarre weather throughout the U.S., from Hurricane Irene and earthquakes along the East Coast to record-breaking extreme high temperatures in the South, it is officially back-to-school season. Parents everywhere are bidding adieu to their college-bound children, many of whom will be home “alone” for the first time in 18 years. But what to do with that spare room and extra time? There is an easy and very rewarding answer available – foster a pet through your local animal shelter.

Fostering allows animal rescue organizations with facilities to take in pets that need a little extra TLC, whether that be medical or behavioral. Many rescue organizations operate only with the help of volunteer foster parents, as they don’t have building and facilities available to house animals. Fostering gives animals a second chance at life, something for which they will be forever grateful.

Austin Pets Alive!, whose foster program currently houses 671 animals, asked their volunteers why they choose to foster, and here are just a few of their responses:

“I foster dogs because I believe everyone should have a dog and my foster dogs have simply not been found by their forever owners yet. Dogs are always happy to see you. They are so funny to watch. They will come sit next you when you are sick or troubled. They are good company when you are alone. Dogs will join in your fun. They want to be with you. Each dog I foster is meant for a certain person or family. I am just the caretaker of these pets until they are found and adopted by those people. The people the dog will love forever. I foster dogs as a service to the new owners, not just the animal.” – Lisa M.

“Fostering is the most rewarding thing I think I’ve ever done – going to the shelter and getting that cat out of its cage, knowing that instead of being carried to the euthanasia room you are carrying her home, giving her a soft bed, kind words, some food and water, and watching her go from a scared, depressed, abandoned cat to a happy, playful, energetic kitty… it is just unbelievable the resilience of these animals and their desire to stay alive and love humans despite their often difficult pasts. Personally I prefer fostering very sick cats, the ones that most people say ‘probably should be put down’ but that APA says ‘lets give him a chance.’” – Lindsay O.

“Wow…why do I foster? I foster because every single one of the approximately 50 pups I have fostered now would have been dead if not for me and my family agreeing to help. I take the baby bottle babies, the ones with prolapsed colons, the ones with major reconstructive surgery needed, the post parvos, and the emaciated needy ones. I spend countless hours bottle feeding, nursing them back to health, etc. but I never once feel put out by it because the unconditional love they give me back is simply amazing. I hear people say how lucky each puppy was to have me…it is the other way around. Each puppy has impacted me in a profound and amazing way. Each puppy has filled my heart with even more love than I knew I could fit in there. It is not easy loving them so much and then sending them on to their forever home. BUT…it is the happiest times for me when I get updates, see them, their pics, etc. and get to see how happy and healthy they are now. Being a foster is the MOST REWARDING part of my life!!!” – Faith W.

“I foster for the joy of having a 6 week old kitten fling himself into my face to rub noses. FLING, pace across chest, FLING, pace back across chest, flop across my neck and PURR.

I foster for that moment where a scared, sick cat first stretches her head out, asking for a chin scratch. She’s not sure she’ll get it, but she trust me enough to ask. There’s that first contact of skin to fur, followed by a deep purr as she realizes I’m not here to hurt her.

I foster for that painful moment where you have to say good bye, holding on to a small paw to let him know he not alone, that he’s okay, and that I love him.

I foster for that moment of discovery when a tiny kitten figures out that a bottle means food! There’s that second where the eyes get wide, a tiny purr builds up, and then the ears start wiggling with glee.

I foster because there’s nothing out there that makes me more aware of the joy that life brings.” – Clara S.

So what are you waiting for? Reach out to your local animal shelter and see if you can help foster today!

Household Manners for Dogs

Fri, 09/23/2011 - 11:18

The best time to begin teaching house rules is the day you bring a new puppy or dog home. Before bringing a new dog home, it is helpful to think about what rules you want for the adult dog long-term. If you want a well-mannered dog, then you must establish, teach and reinforce a clear set of rules. Ignore behaviors you don’t want and praise behaviors you do want.

Recommended Household Rules:

1.  No dogs allowed on the furniture. If you want your dog to spend time on the couch or bed with you, then teach the dog a “cue” such as “couch” and “bed” and then do NOT allow the dog on the furniture without getting the cue first. Teach the dog it is ONLY okay to be on the furniture with permission. This is not an easy lesson for dogs to learn.  You must also teach the word, “off” and be consistent in telling the dog to get “off” if the dog gets up without permission. Use instructive praise.

2. No dog teeth allowed on human skin.  If is NOT okay for dog teeth to touch human skin.  Teach dogs to first do gentle mouthing, second not to mouth without permission, and finally not to mouth at all.

3.  No dog feet on people. Do NOT allow the dog’s front legs up on people for any reason. It is easier for people to pet or hug a dog that is up on two feet but allowing the dog to get attention in this way leads to trouble. Unless your dog is small and you WANT this behavior for a lifetime, get down on the dog’s level and ONLY give attention when the dog has all four feet on the ground. Teach the dog to “sit” for greetings and praise. Do a quarter turn and do not give the dog eye contact if the dog jumps on you.

4.  No barking away from home. Do not allow your dog to bark at people, animals or objects when you are off your property.  Teach your dog the “quiet” instruction at home so that you can use it for times outside of the home when you want the dog to stop barking.  At home, do not allow your dog to join in with neighborhood dog barking as this habit can become a nuisance.

5.  No canines blocking human paths. Do not let sleeping dogs lie if that dog is in your path. Teach your dog what the word “move” means and then use it to move the dog out of your way. You don’t need a dog underfoot when you have an arm full of groceries. Dogs that block pathways often perceive they are controlling a power area which may lead to a misperception that the people in the house are there to serve the dog instead of the opposite.

6.  No food bowl or toy guarding. Do not allow dogs to think that food and toys belong to them. Instead, teach the dog that you own and control ALL the valued resources in the home. Show the dog how generous you can be if the dog shows you deference to your leadership. In other words, always ask the dog to “earn” his supper or a toy by asking the dog to do something for you, FIRST, such as sit, lie down, roll-over…you get the idea!  Do not allow the dog to guard food or possessions from any people, under ANY circumstances. As with all rules, begin this lesson on day one!

7.  No household destruction. Do not allow the dog to destroy dog toys not designed for destruction (e.g., balls, squeaky toys, plush toys, or anything made of fabric.)  The dog may not know how much you paid for that item but they do need to know the item is NOT theirs to destroy. Supervise all play. If the dog begins to show destructive chewing, take the toy away.

8.  Always come when called. Teach your dog to come when called. Do not accidentally punish the dog for coming to you when called by then putting the dog outside, punishing the dog for not coming quickly, or giving the dog a bath. NEVER follow the word, “come” with an action that is unpleasant for the dog.

9. Cheerfully go into your kennel. Teach the dog a “kennel up” instruction to cue the dog to enter the kennel upon request. The goal is for the dog to LOVE being in the kennel and to respond to this cue with delight. Teach your dog “contented confinement” from day one by providing a treat that he/she loves and only receives while in the kennel.

Rowdy the Heartbreaker

Thu, 09/22/2011 - 14:30

OK folks, more often than I’d like I come across stories that plain break my heart. Rowdy’s story is a sad one, but I think we can help to change that.

Rowdy is a 10-year-old Australian Shepherd in Palisade, CO, who is athletic, smart and healthy. He’s looking for a new home because his Mom was just diagnosed with terminal cancer. He’s used to living on a 4 acre property, and being his owner’s companion on camping and hiking trips. I’m told that you would never think that Rowdy (true to his name) is 10 years old. He loves to run the fence-line when trains pass by, and gets along great with people. He’d do best in a home with no small children, and perhaps as the only pet, as he’s known to chase cats.

If you are interested in adopting Rowdy, please leave a comment with you’re email, and I’ll connect you with Rowdy’s owner.

If you’re looking for adorable, thoughtful, playful, and cuddly..

Dog-On-Diet Program Details

Mon, 09/12/2011 - 11:16

According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, an estimated 54% of dogs and cats in the United States are overweight or obese – that’s 93 million dogs and cats! This can be attributed to many different factors – over-feeding, lack of exercise or aging. Maybe you just adopted an adult pet that came home to you overweight! Regardless of why, there are many risks to your pet being overweight. As with humans, carrying around extra pounds can lead to heart and joint issues, type-2 diabetes, decreased quality of life and a shorter life-expectancy.*

The good news is that getting your pet to a healthy weight and fitness level doesn’t have to be a chore! We’ve come up with a special program that we hope you’ll be interested in. We’re looking to feature a group of overweight dogs in each size class (extra-small, small, medium, large, extra-large), and publish their weight loss journeys on Facebook and our blog. We’ll send each featured participant a starter kit that will include free ORGANIX Weight Management food, Good Buddy Rawhides, healthy weight loss tips from our veterinarian, and other goodies. Each week, participants will post updates on Facebook so fans can track their progress. The program will run for 3 months, and fans will vote for their favorite transformation in each size class. The winners will receive a free year of Castor & Pollux food!

To enter, please read the program requirements and fill out the questions below, and attach a recent photo of your pet and send to mary.mcpherson@castorpolluxpet.com .  Entries will be considered through 9/25/11.

As a participant of the Castor & Pollux Dog-On-Diet Program, you must agree to the following:

  •  My dog is at least 1 year old.
  • I will follow the 7-10 day transition period (as described in the program details) while changing to ORGANIX Weight Management.
  • I will follow the minimum feeding requirements as prescribed on the bag, using ONLY the ORGANIX Weight Management formula as the daily food.
  • I will be available for an intro phone conversation with the Castor & Pollux team.
  • I will submit a weekly update by email and on Facebook that includes the following:
    • Photo and/or video
    • Any fun activities completed
    • Any noticeable progress (weight change, energy level, appearance)
    • I will submit a monthly blog post (written and/or video) that includes photo updates (timing of blog post deadline to be determined by Castor & Pollux team).

 Dog-On-Diet Entry Form

  2. What is your pet’s age?
  3. How long has your pet been a part of your family?
  4. What is the breed(s) of your pet?

Read Any Ingredient Labels Lately?

Wed, 09/07/2011 - 17:20

As I walked down the aisles of a local food for pets store, browsing at the various options I began to pick up the bags and look at the ingredients. I was more than a little surprised with what I saw. Now, I’ll be the first to admit that working for Castor & Pollux makes me biased when it comes to what food I’d recommend for your pet. But there is one thing you can depend on THAT IS NOT biased – the ingredient label.

It’s easy enough to get distracted by pet food company representatives, a nice-looking display or special discount offers, but be wary. Even if the package claims to use natural ingredients, or have a scientifically proven or holistic formula, it’s not always the best choice. I took a few pictures to show you what I mean. Let’s look at the first 4 ingredients on the labels:

Science Diet – Active Longevity Formula – Mature Adult
First 4 ingredients: whole grain corn, chicken by-product meal, animal fat, soybean mill run

All of these ingredients (being the first 4, they likely make up the majority of the food) raise red flags for me. They are depending on corn as a protein source as opposed to a high quality meat like chicken, lamb or turkey. Chicken by-product meal (as opposed to chicken meal) is a big no-no – the majority of the nutritional benefits of chicken have been removed by the time it becomes a “by-product”. Animal fat can come from any animal, you’d think they could at least tell you what kind! And then there’s “soybean mill run” – have you ever heard of that? It’s the by-product of processing soybeans (the soybean hull and fragments of soybeans). Sounds tasty right?

Iams – Healthy Naturals – Adult
First 4 ingredients – Chicken, chicken by-product meal, brewers rice, corn meal

Iams started out good with a named animal protein as the first ingredient, but it goes downhill from there. Chicken by-product meal has no place in a food formula touting to be healthy and natural. Brewers rice is a solid carbohydrate source, but seeing corn meal just makes me unhappy.

Nature’s Recipe – Adult Lamb Meal & Rice
First 4 ingredients: Lamb meal, pearled barley, oatmeal, ground rice

Nature’s Recipe made a good choice with lamb meal as the first ingredient, but it’s the only animal protein in the first four ingredients! With barley, oatmeal and rice following, this formula relies heavily on grain for protein. Where are the fruits and veggies, Nature’s Recipe? The only vegetable I see on that ingredient label is tomato pomace.

So let’s take a look at the ORGANIX and Natural Ultramix. I think you’ll understand why I feel so comfortable recommending our brands.

ORGANIX – Adult
First 4 ingredients: Organic Chicken, Chicken Meal, Organic Brown Rice, Organic Peas

Natural Ultramix – Adult
First 4 ingredients: Chicken, Chicken Meal, Turkey Meal, Milo (Sorghum)

A quick reminder, here’s what to look for in choosing a food for your pet:
• A named animal-based protein as the #1 ingredient—like chicken, lamb or turkey
• High-quality protein meals—like chicken, turkey, lamb or salmon meal—to complement the first ingredient
• Quality fiber for a healthy digestive tract
• A named fat source to help promote healthy skin and coat
• Fruits and vegetables that provide vitamins, minerals & antioxidants

In the end, don’t be fooled by fancy marketing. Walk the aisle like I did, and read the back of the bags.

The Sweetest Chocolate Lab Mix in Town!

Fri, 08/26/2011 - 19:33

Look at this gorgeous boy and just try to say no. I dare you! Cadbury is a roughly 3year old lab mix rescue that need a family to love him forever.. He likes to play with toys, people, and other dogs. He is crate trained and has had some obedience training and I have no doubt he is as loyal as can be. If you think he has a new home with you, contact Northwest Animal Companions at nwac-oregon.org or stop by and see them at Walker Rd Petsmart in Beaverton OR this Saturday or Sunday!
